Turmeric
CURCUMA LONGA
This flowering plant requires large amounts of rainfall and a strict temperature range between 20 and 30°C. Cambodia’s tropical savanna climate provides ideal conditions for its cultivation.
In our Forest Garden, the spice is grown for its roots, which help prevent weeds and soil erosion while preserving the fertility and richness of the soil.
Turmeric holds an important place in Khmer culture. It is a staple ingredient in many curries, giving them their signature yellow colour. It is also used as a natural dye, notably for monks’ robes.
Curcumin is the main active compound found in turmeric and is a powerful antioxidant. This potent anti-inflammatory compound is not easily absorbed by the body. Consuming it with other compounds, such as piperine found in black pepper, can increase its absorption by up to 2,000%.
The spice has an earthy, bitter taste and a distinctive, mildly aromatic scent, which can be found in both our herbal tea and gin.
