This tree of the mahogany family is native to the Indian sub-continent but has spread greatly across Asia, Africa, and the Americas. The tree typically grows to 15 meters and has toothed leaflets that are typically evergreen.
It is widely renowned for its medicinal uses and benefits including high calcium and mineral contents, anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory properties among others. It is also used to treat and prevent fevers and malaria and as an insecticide and birth control. The bark is used for dental health. In AYURVEDIC medicine it is a blood cleaner.
It is a staple herb in traditional Khmer cuisine. The plant has a strong bitter taste.
